Deleting Your SwapMate Data

You are in control of your personal information. This page explains how to permanently delete your SwapMate account and the personal data associated with it, including data received when you signed in with Facebook or Google.

Delete your account in the app

  1. Open the SwapMate app and sign in.
  2. Go to Settings and tap Delete Account.
  3. Type your account email address to confirm it's really you.
  4. Tap Delete Account to submit the request.

Your account is immediately deactivated and scheduled for permanent deletion after a 30-day grace period. During those 30 days you can restore your account yourself — reopen SwapMate, go to Settings and tap Cancel Deletion (or email us). If you take no action, your account is deleted automatically once the grace period ends: your profile, listings, swap history, messages, ratings, consent records, your identity-verification outcome, and any data obtained from Facebook or Google sign-in are permanently removed and cannot be recovered.

If your account owns a company profile, you'll first need to close the company. Closing it returns you and your team members to ordinary individual accounts and removes the company's listings — company profiles are not transferred to another user. The app guides you through this before your account can be deleted.
If you verified your identity, SwapMate stores only the outcome of that check, which is deleted with your account. The ID document and selfie themselves are captured and held by our identity-verification provider (Didit) under its own retention policy; contact us if you wish to exercise your rights in respect of that data.

Email us

If you can no longer access the app, email our Information Officer at privacy@swapmate.co.za from the email address linked to your account, with the subject line "Data Deletion Request". We will verify your identity, schedule your account for deletion under the same 30-day process, and confirm completion, in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

What is deleted, and what we must keep

We permanently delete your profile and contact details, item listings and photos, swap history, conversations, ratings, consent records, and any profile information received from Facebook or Google sign-in. Where South African law requires us to keep certain records (for example, financial transaction records for tax and fraud-prevention purposes), we retain only an anonymised record — stripped of the information that identifies you — and only for as long as the law requires.

Signed in with Facebook? You can also remove SwapMate's access from your Facebook account at any time under Facebook → Settings → Apps and Websites. Removing access stops future data sharing; to delete data we already hold, use one of the options above.
